A P.atk pet has base hits based off their P.atk and their Spells are based off of P.atk too. There are a few exceptions (like that one Koala skill which is M.atk based). This means they deal decent damage on normal hits and even better damage on spells. They have passive P.def boost and usually have decent HP/P.def to tank to some extent.
A M.atk pet has base hits based off their P.atk which is BULL. Their spells are based off of M.atk. So they deal massive damage only when spells cooldown. Till then they are crap. Most M.atk pets can't tank at all. The ones that have the P.def/HP to tank usually don't generate enough threat to hold aggro permanently.
Range helps on field but then again you have the Harpy, which is P.atk based and boasts more attack range than every other pet in the game.
Just look at all the P.atk pets in the game and compare them to the M.atk pets of their tier. The p.atk pets win all the time. The only good M.atk pets in the game are those that you wouldn't use for DD ever (like Blue Pixie).
Naga sucks compared to Kenta.
Angel sucks compared to Kenta (in terms of DD alone Angel loses to RP too).
Ifrit sucks compared to Genie.
WD is a JOKE in front of DT.
Siren has no DD till it's level 150.
RP is a good pet but can be outperformed by melee pets (Skele/Wolf) in terms of damage dealing over a time frame long enough.
The mage pets should have their base damage based off their M.ATK (Int) instead of P.ATK (Str or Dex/Agi) for them to be worth anything. Till then they will always be inferior to their melee counterparts.
